INTRODUCTION – The Word and the Universe Are Two Pages of the Same Book
The Holy Qur'an is not only a source of spirituality but also a book that carries the codes of science. Its verses nourish both the soul and the mind. The Qur'an itself declares:
"We will show them Our signs in the universe and within themselves..." – (Surah Fussilat, 53)
This verse indicates that the universe is an unopened Qur'an, and the Qur'an is the spoken version of the universe. In this article, we will explore the scientific verses of the Qur'an and examine how they align with modern science.
I. The Big Bang Theory and the “Separation of the Heavens”
Science says the universe expanded from a single point through a great explosion. The Qur’an said 1400 years ago:
“Do not the disbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, then We split them apart...” – (Surah Al-Anbiya, 30)
The expression “joined together and We split them” corresponds to the Big Bang theory. The state scientists call a “singular point” is poetically and scientifically reflected in this verse.
II. The Layers of Earth and Heaven – Scientific Confirmation of Layered Structure
The Qur'an states:
“It is Allah Who created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them…” – (Surah At-Talaq, 12)
Science confirms that the atmosphere consists of seven functional layers:
-
Troposphere
-
Stratosphere
-
Mesosphere
-
Thermosphere
-
Exosphere
-
Ionosphere
-
Magnetosphere
The Qur'an presents the structural layering of the atmosphere with a poetic view of nature.
III. The Water Cycle – A Natural Mechanism
The Qur'an says:
“And We sent down water from the sky in due measure, and We lodged it in the earth, and We certainly are able to take it away.” – (Surah Al-Mu’minun, 18)
This verse describes evaporation, cloud formation, precipitation, and the water returning into circulation — all in a simple yet accurate manner. Modern science confirmed these processes only in the 20th century.
IV. The Function of Mountains – Tectonic Stability
The Qur'an says:
“And We placed the mountains as pegs (stakes).” – (Surah An-Naba, 6–7)
Modern geology shows that mountains stabilize the movement of the earth’s crust through deep “root systems” that provide tectonic balance — like stakes anchoring a tent.
V. Embryonic Development – Stages in the Womb
The Qur'an states:
“We created man from a drop of fluid, then We made it a clinging clot, then We made the clot into a lump…” – (Surah Al-Mu’minun, 13–14)
These descriptions align with modern embryological knowledge:
-
Nutfah – sperm
-
Alaqah – a clinging substance
-
Mudghah – a chewed-like piece of flesh (early formation of body structure)
Though confirmed with medical devices in the 20th century, the Qur’an revealed these details centuries ago.
VI. The Invisible Barrier Between Seas
The Qur'an says:
“He has let loose the two seas meeting together. Between them is a barrier they do not transgress.” – (Surah Ar-Rahman, 19–20)
Science confirms that when two water bodies of different salinity meet — like the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean — they do not completely mix due to differences in their physical properties. This natural “barrier” is what the Qur'an refers to as “barzakh”.
VII. The Sun’s Movement – Orbit and Motion
The Qur'an states:
“And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed).” – (Surah Ya-Sin, 38)
Science shows that the Sun is not stationary — it moves through the Milky Way galaxy on an orbital path at approximately 827,000 km/h, matching the Qur’an’s phrase “fixed course”.
VIII. Genetics and Inheritance
The Qur'an states:
“He created man from a drop, and lo! he is an open disputer.” – (Surah An-Nahl, 4)
The word nutfah refers not just to sperm, but also to the encoded genetic information. Science has confirmed this through DNA — humans are formed from inherited genetic codes spanning generations.
IX. The Expansion of the Universe – Ever-Growing Boundaries
“And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are (its) expander.” – (Surah Az-Zariyat, 47)
This verse accurately reflects the theory of an expanding universe — a fact discovered by Hubble in 1929. Yet the Qur’an revealed this knowledge long before.
X. Sound and Vibration – Spiritual and Physical Harmony
The Qur’an notes that mountains, birds, and all beings glorify Allah:
“There is not a thing but that it glorifies Him with praise, but you do not understand their glorification.” – (Surah Al-Isra, 44)
Modern science confirms that everything — even inanimate matter — emits vibrations. This verse can be understood both spiritually and physically.
Conclusion: The Qur'an – A Map of Both Spirit and Science
The Qur’an is not just a book of prayer, fasting, and ethics. It is also a cosmic revelation that contains the profound structure of life, the universe, and scientific thought.
These verses show that:
-
The Qur’an does not oppose science, it supports it.
-
Verses do not “replace” science, they “inspire” it.
-
It opens a path for humans to understand the universe through both faith and knowledge.
