The Prophet (PBUH) in the Modern Era and Social Media
Introduction
The world is rapidly evolving, and with the development of information technologies, social media has become an inseparable part of human life. These platforms allow people to communicate, express opinions, share knowledge, and influence society. However, they also present ethical dilemmas, misinformation, and negative behaviors.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as a supreme moral example, called people to truth, kindness, love, and compassion. He encouraged his followers to embody noble character and always urged acts of goodness. So, if he were alive today and used social media, how would he behave? The answer lies in his timeless principles and values.
1. Truth and Honesty
The Prophet (PBUH) promoted truthfulness, transparency, and sincerity. He strongly opposed falsehood and urged people to remain loyal to the truth:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
On social media, this would mean:
-
Sharing only verified and truthful information
-
Avoiding false or manipulative content
-
Engaging with honesty – no fake profiles or misleading messages
2. Avoiding Insults and Hate
Today, many hide behind anonymity online to spread hate and insults. However, the Prophet (PBUH) condemned such behavior:
“A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands others are safe.” (Bukhari)
He would not belittle anyone or spread hate online. Instead, he would unite people through love, patience, and empathy.
3. Educational and Beneficial Content
The Prophet (PBUH) loved to teach and saw sharing beneficial knowledge as a noble act:
“The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.”
He would likely share:
-
Educational and inspiring content
-
Religious, scientific, and social wisdom
-
Positive messages rather than meaningless posts
4. Avoiding Anger and Meaningless Arguments
One of the major issues on social media is engaging in pointless debates. The Prophet (PBUH) advised:
“The strong person is not the one who overcomes others in wrestling but the one who controls himself in anger.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
He would not participate in heated, unproductive arguments or respond to hate with hate. Instead, he would encourage patience, reflection, and kindness.
5. Avoiding Wasting Time
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Time is one of the greatest blessings a person possesses.”
Spending hours on social media, watching trivial content, or engaging in futile conversations distracts from life’s greater purposes. The Prophet (PBUH) valued every moment and urged people to use time wisely.
Conclusion
If Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) lived today, he would indeed use social media—but only for beneficial purposes. His posts would be filled with wisdom, love, and compassion. He would promote kindness, truth, and valuable knowledge.
As followers of his example, we should also:
-
Share truth and helpful content
-
Approach others with compassion and respect
-
Avoid slander, gossip, and insults
-
Not waste time on meaningless scrolling
-
Stay away from anger and toxic arguments
Social media is a powerful tool. If used wisely, it can bring great good. Let us use these platforms with integrity and follow the beautiful character of our Prophet (PBUH).
